Atlanta – The shooting death of a taxi driver in Marietta on Friday night marked at least the fifth cabbie slaying in metro Atlanta since September, adding to concern among drivers throughout the region.

Marietta police were called to the Concepts 21 apartment complex at 8:15 p.m. after someone found Christopher Simmons, 21, lying on the ground next to his cab, police spokesman Mark Bishop said.

Simmons, a Marietta resident and driver for Acuario Taxi, had been shot once in the chest, police said. He was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Bishop said detectives have not tracked down any witnesses to the shooting and have few leads to work with. He said he did not know if Simmons was dropping off or picking up someone at the complex, at 2600 Bentley Road, nor if the shooting occurred inside the cab.

Bishop also said police had no evidence to link Simmons’ murder to the other cabbie killings reported in metro Atlanta in recent months. They included:

• Tampico Taxi driver Juan Rubio-Castro, 27, shot to death in his cab Dec. 9 at a Riverdale apartment complex.

• Dane Grobman, 54, shot to death Nov. 7 in his cab in DeKalb County.

• Berhanu Yassin, 45, killed in his cab Sept. 6 outside the Kensington MARTA station in DeKalb County.

Cab drivers are growing increasingly anxious about the local deaths, said Kimberly Smith, a dispatcher for Yellow Cab and Rapid Taxi in Atlanta.

“They want bullet-proof windows in their cabs,” she said. “Some of them want to carry weapons. It’s getting crazy.”

Malachi Hull, director of Atlanta’s Bureau of Taxicabs and Vehicles for Hire, said he is pushing for an ordinance mandating that every cab be equipped with a camera or a bullet-proof partition between driver and passenger.

The proposed ordinance likely will go before the Atlanta City Council in January, Hull said.

One night, sometime around 2000, me and my buddy Paul “JuicyJew” Dinnon were hanging at this warehouse party “hippy flipping” (Acid and Ecstasy…don’t all good stories start like this?) in Atlanta. It’s about 6AM and we decided to split and hailed a cab.

Once inside the cab, we hadn’t said anything to indicate that we were down racism, but the vab driver segues into a diatribe about “Niggers” while shooting black folk with a mock banana / mock pistol. The Bigotry was strong with this one. He was very thorough with is hate, breaking Negros into subcategories (Ethiopians, Africans, ect…) and idenifying the individual characteristics that were particularly loathsome about them.

He was a very entertaining, but ignorant man.

He gave us a card and we used him as our personal driver just for years because he was such a character. When Steve discovers we are all in the porn business, he begins to express an interest in becoming male talent. Did I mention that Steve isn’t exactly easy on the eyes? He looked like Galliger on crack. After months of pestering us about becoming the ultimate king of anal sex (Stuff-A-Hoe Butt-A-Freak-O), we told him that if he could find a girl with standards low enough to bang him, we’d film it and put it up on ConsumptionJunction.com.

Maybe then, he would get his shot at porn infamomy.

One day he phoned me at the office and told me he had the female talent who as raring-to-go in the cab. Five minutes later he pulled up.

She was a nasty white-trash looking crack hoe.

Our original concept was to make a reality Bangbus porn style scene where Steve would be the taxi driver and would make the female patrons “work off” their cab fares with various sexual favors.

The video turned oh-so different.
